I tell ya! By Kari Schmidt-Pukropski of Cornerstone Framing. She is our local framer here in Conroe. Kari worked with me and we came up with a smashing frame for my piece Why Not. It is just as fun as the painting and really makes her pop out to create a bold presence in the room. Yes I should have framed it BEFORE I put her in the judged spring show, but you know how it goes sometimes.

Kari has worked with several other local artist and they are all happy with the work she delivered. I believe that when you frame your art it does more than just create a boundary for your piece to stay in. I think it actually becomes an integral part of it, an extension of your piece. And after working with Kari I learned this is her belief as well and from my perspective this is a feature you want with a framer.

Artist Paint In

I once again had the pleasure of meeting up with some local artist at Christ Church on League Line Road, April 13th. The group hostess Sandy and Brenda instructed everyone on various techniques, acrylic paint pouring, watercolor, and the joint compound as we did last month. A couple of girls worked on some existing art pieces. 

I chose to try acrylic pouring and worked on two, 8 x 10 inch stretched canvases and four small canvas boards. I finished one of the 8 x 10 canvas after I got home and it was completely dry, I outlined various shapes with black then painted parts black and other bits in gold. So happy I found a perfect frame for it in my stash. I've titled it Mind's Eye, it's almost like cloud watching, you can see whatever your imagination wants.  Please forgive the photo as it's a bit wonky.

I'm sure I will do this acrylic pouring again, it is a fun and exciting technique that can have some unexpected outcomes. I'm not sure what I will do with the four little canvas boards, so they will sit in my future project box until I'm ready for them. The other 8 x 10 inch canvas awaits a face, and as I type this I believe I know which one it will be.

Jamie Hatfield

Mixed Media Artist

Jamie’s overall body of work leans towards Modern-Contemporary with splashes of Fantasy/Surrealism. It’s hard to pin down her style to any certain artistic genre, as she is still developing and redefining it. She is currently working on a series titled, Two-29, it is inspired from a bi-annual face challenge that Jamie has been a part of for several years. She draws her imaginative faces, onto small bits of watercolor paper and from there she puts her favorites onto stretched canvas. For instance, Why Not, shown above, was first done as an 8 ½” x 5 ½” drawing and her second finished piece in the series, Jolene, below, began as a 2 ¾” x 7” drawing.

Jamie’s preferred medium is acrylic paint, but she does not limit herself to that. Graphite, colored pencils, pastels, along with inks can sometimes be spotted in her work. Found objects have a habit of making an appearance as well. Some of her favorite items to use are paper, metal bits, wire, wood, glass and beads. Her use of material depends on the sacred language that happens between the piece and her heart. Due to Jamie’s humor and lighthearted spirit she has been known to bring a bit of the unexpected into her work.

Jamie states, “I’m not limited by the medium I use or the genre, because of this or in spite of it I’m able to create freely and that’s one of the best parts of being a mixed media artist.” From there she goes on to say, “I thank God, for the gift of creativity and I’m happy when someone smiles or otherwise gets enjoyment from what I do.”

Jamie lives and creates in Conroe Texas, at My Purple Door Studios. She is married to the love of her life and they share seven children, many grandchildren and two dogs. Jamie is a proud thirty-four years young and claims, “that’s just as good a number as any.” She has been creating in one way or another since the mid-70s. Jamie also writes poetry and a few of her pieces have included a poem. She enjoys laughing and filming art videos for her YouTube channel, Artist Poet Girl, as well as watching art videos online. As an active member of Conroe Art League she can be found on occasion as a Docent at the Madeley building Art Gallery on Simonton St. in Conroe. Jamie may also be found online under the alias name Artist Poet Girl.

Woodlands Waterway Art Festival 2015

What a day! As a member of Conroe Art League, I volunteered to work this really great festival and I committed my husband to work with me. We had gate duty, we handed out the festival flyer it contained a map, a time schedule for events and listed out the vendors and artist. We helped people put on the required wrist bands and welcomed them in to see and buy ART.

It was cool when we first got there and I almost wished I had put on a sweater instead of a long sleeved denim shirt. The treat of thunderstorms was very apparent with heavy clouds and closed umbrellas in most hands. But the morning shift went off without a drop. And by the end of our shift it had warmed up quite well, almost too well.

After changing out of our volunteer tee shirts we headed out to see the art for ourselves. And once again this festival did not disappoint. I didn’t really take pictures as most artist frown on that due to copyright issues, but I will show you the front of the flyer

And this photo of me, that my husband took, sitting on a musical art bench. We ate tacos and stopped to listen and watch various musical groups around the festival grounds. What fun we had looking at different types of art, touching wind chimes made from rocks – very cool I tell you and talking to artist from all over the U.S. It was a great day.
